The Bowen Technique and back pain

According to the Health and Safety Executive 38.8 million estimated working days were lost due to work-related ill health and non-fatal workplace injuries in 2019-2020. Stress, depression or anxiety and musculoskeletal disorders accounted for the majority of days lost due to work-related ill health, 17.9 million and 8.9 million respectively. On average, each person suffering took around 17.6 days off work. This varies as follows:

  • 9.1 days for injuries

  • 20.0 days for ill health cases

  • 21.6 days for stress, depression or anxiety

  • 18.4 days for musculoskeletal disorders

Having a healthy posture and dealing with little niggles, as well as more chronic conditions, in good time is therefore of vital importance. The Bowen Technique may be one aspect to help you achieve a healthier lifestyle as many people choose Bowen for the management of soft tissue and joint pain such as back, shoulder and neck pain as well as sciatica to name a few. It is often equally useful for stress management and general health maintenance as it is deeply relaxing and re-balancing to both the body and mind.

Everyone is unique and if no relief is felt within 3-5 sessions then you will be referred back to your GP. Fortunately, on many occasions clients report experiencing positive results after a course of Bowen Therapy and they often go on to choose Bowen as a helpful means of stress management and health maintenance.

Back Pain

Back pain is a very common condition and pain ranges from a dull ache to sharp pains and these pains can be constant or come and go.

Pain may increase if you are sitting or standing too long, with exercise or when carrying out certain movements.

Back pain can be debilitating as well as very tiring, stressful and frustrating. Sometimes, if we are lucky, the back pain goes away on its own and all we might need are a few painkillers and some rest from activities that aggravate it.

However, this is not always the case and The Bowen Technique, with its intense relaxation and nudges to the body, may be an important factor in managing your back's wellbeing.

If needed, maintenance treatments are usually recommended every 4-6 weeks and many choose maintenance sessions of Bowen as part of their self-care routine.

Sciatica

The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body, starting at the base of the spine and running down both legs. Sciatica is when the sciatic nerve is compressed, which may be caused by a number of different problems such as muscle spasms in the buttocks, an injury or trauma to the area or a herniated disc.

It tends to occur on one side and the pain is often worse in the limbs than in the lower back itself. Clients may experience sharp pains and/or dull continuous aching and often report burning sensations, pins and needles, numbness and muscle weakness as well. In many cases, they also find it very difficult to find any comfortable position throughout the day or night.

Once again, Bowen, with its unique non-invasive and gentle approach, can be a key element to manage discomfort associated with sciatica. It is recommended to have 2-4 sessions but very often, symptoms may change as soon as during or after the first session or a few days later.

Please note: The Bowen Technique and other complementary therapies do not replace conventional medicine, and you should always seek the advice of your GP. Complementary therapists do not diagnose, nor do they prescribe or alter medication. They may, however, advise clients to be regularly assessed by their doctor in case their medication dose needs to be adjusted.
